Types of engineer
Systems Engineers
Typically involved with activities such as specifying, planning, procuring and implementing new systems to meet the increasing demands on the Air Traffic Management System, performing sustaining activities to existing systems, or carrying out strategic systems planning and development of standards.
Software Engineers
Typically involved with activities such as developing and maintaining software components and sub-systems/systems to support operational Air Traffic Management Systems or the provision of prototype/simulation systems.
Operational Engineers
Involved with configuring, restoring and maintaining on a 24 hour basis the NATS Centres based Air Traffic Management engineered system and the Communications, Navigation and Surveillance infrastructure systems to provide the engineering aspects of the NATS operational services.
Test and Integration Engineers
Typically involved with testing and delivery of new software builds, system level and interface testing of updated versions of software, maintenance of the facilities to perform these activities, and investigating, analysing and reporting on problems encountered.
Direct Entrant Graduate Scheme
NATS operates a DEG scheme, accredited by the Institute of Electrical Engineers. The scheme is a two year programme comprising two months of formal training followed by top-ups of approximately two days per month. During the two years, graduates are placed with various parts of the business to gain in-depth understanding of our systems and procedures. Our recruitment for this scheme is targeted at recent graduates with a MEng (or BEng + MSc) in an appropriate subject.
Engineering Technician
NATS operates an Engineering Technician training scheme, accredited by the Institute of Electrical Engineers. The scheme is an 18 month programme comprising formal training followed by work placements and a project. The scheme is looking for practically minded, highly motivated individuals that will have the ability to work on operational Air Traffic Control Equipment (e.g. installing, commissioning, testing equipment in the field and at control centres; maintenance of equipment, control & monitoring, fault rectification, Projects and Logistics etc).
To apply for the scheme we require individuals to have BTEC OND/HNC or Degree in an electronic discipline.
