Human Factors

The Human Factors group is responsible for providing services throughout NATS, aimed at ensuring that human factors risks in new and existing air traffic management systems are addressed. This includes ensuring that human factors criteria and techniques are applied to the design and development of systems, training and procedures in order to promote effective human performance and minimise the consequences of human error.

The Human Factors group is concerned with all aspects of a controller’s involvement with the air traffic control system. These aspects range from the design of workstations to measuring controllers’ workloads and understanding how controllers make decisions. The Human Factors group aims to maximise the human contribution to operational effectiveness and safety. The Human Factors group performs a key risk management activity and, when properly integrated, can often pay for itself in lifecycle cost savings. Introduction of new technology and the evolution of the role of controllers means that the Human Factors group is essential to reduce risk, reduce time to market, enhance operational effectiveness and safety, improve training and gain competitive advantage.
