Software Engineer
Job ID: 1140
Location: Hurn, Bournemouth (moving to CTC Whiteley from mid 2009)
Salary: £37,251.18 to £49,668.23
This is a rare chance for a Software Engineer with a proven track-record of developing technical applications to work with some of the most advanced technology in the world, in a constantly-changing modern arena.
NATS provides air traffic control services to aircraft flying in UK airspace, and over the eastern part of the North Atlantic. This year NATS will handle more than 2.4 million flights carrying over 220 million passengers. Safety is NATS’ first and foremost priority but we also aim to provide our service in an efficient and cost-effective way. Needless to say, this is an arena which moves at an incredible pace – and it’s vital our Air Traffic Controllers have the technology to stay ahead of increasing amounts and changing patterns of air traffic.
This is why your role, as part of our Simulator and Operational Information Systems department, will prove so fascinating. Essentially, it’ll be your job to ensure that we continually develop groundbreaking software for the simulators that are used to train our Air Traffic Controllers and the information systems used in NATS air traffic control operations.
That will give you a great deal of variety. You could be looking at how technology could help to increase the amount of traffic any one air traffic controller can monitor. You could be working to present air traffic controllers with the support information they need, e.g. air traffic predictions. Equally, you could be thinking of innovative solutions: Exploring the potential of voice recognition technologies and controller tools based on sophisticated algorithms.
Day to day, you’ll be responsible for specifying, designing and implementing software components that when integrated with other software components and external systems deliver our simulation and information systems. You will also be involved with rectifying any problems with these systems.
So, as well as experience of developing technical applications, you will have a good understanding of C++. Knowledge of Microsoft .NET, Visual Basic and database technology would also be a distinct advantage. You will need a good degree in a computer-related, engineering or numerate subject (or equivalent as defined by a chartered professional body such as the BCS or IET).
