Training and development
Starting in September, you'll go through a formal three to four month training period with courses such as:
- Induction
- H&S & Man handling
- Radio communications in practice
- AGA Comms
- Comms service monitor 2945A
- Intro to Navaids
- RDP/FDP Systems Overview course
- Practical Radar Technology
- ATC familiarisation
- Data comms concepts & practice
- Introduction to Project Management
During the formal training period, called the Basic/Qualification period, you'll be based at our Corporate & Technical Centre (CTC) at Whitely in Hampshire. During this period you will have regular (monthly) meetings with your training manager. During this time you will also be enrolled onto the IET Engineering Technician Scheme as a student and you will be expected to maintain a personal logbook of your training and development. On completion of this training there will be a formal examination on the technical courses you have completed which you will have to pass. You will then receive a salary increase. After this you will join your respective units and will be directly managed by your Line Manager. He or she will provide you with on-the-job training and familiarisation for your new role.
You will be asked to complete and present a business improvement-related project on a subject of your choice over the next four months. If you do this well, you'll be rewarded with a salary increase.
The scheme will ensure that you have reached the required competency level within the 18 months' training period. Your progress will be monitored and discussed throughout and, at every stage, you'll get all the support you need to complete the scheme and sharpen your technical and individual abilities. It is in our best interests to do everything possible to keep you in the scheme; however, if you do not meet the standards required your training may be terminated.
